Playbox and the University of Tsukuba Kickball Club launch a demonstration experiment of the "Playbox" video selection application.
Development Background
For players and coaches in the developmental age group who are members of club teams and club activities, video analysis is essential to improve their skills, including reviewing their play and preparing for the next opponent. However, compared to the professional category, players in the developmental age group have limited opportunities to review and learn important plays during games. This problem is caused by the difficulty of filming the game itself and the lack of progress in utilizing the filmed footage. Therefore, there is a need to establish a system that allows quick and easy access to game footage necessary for performance improvement, while reducing the burden of filming.
To meet this need, we are developing "Playbox," an application that supports the filming and use of match footage by teams in the developmental age. The application will utilize video recognition AI technology to provide users with the following three functions
-
Unattended automatic shooting
-
Highlight generation
-
Comparison video suggestion
These functions will enable players and coaches to obtain match footage and analyze their own play and the trends of their opponents without any hassle. By automating much of the work involved in video analysis, "Playbox" aims to simultaneously address the "issues of game filming" and "issues of video utilization" in the field of sports, and to provide powerful support for players and coaches in the developmental age to improve their skills.
Outline of the Demonstration Experiment
Playbox is conducting a functional verification of the "Playbox" video selection application through a demonstration experiment with the University of Tsukuba's Kickball Club (hereinafter referred to as the "Kickball Club"). In this experiment, the application's highlight generation function is being provided on a trial basis to the B1 team of the Kickball Club in order to verify issues related to the use of video in the field of sports.
With "Playbox," players and coaches can upload footage of a game and watch highlights of the entire match. In the highlight generation, important scenes of the match, such as scoring and shooting scenes, are extracted from the entire match. This allows for a quick review of the match, enabling objective analysis of the play from the video and identification of areas for improvement.
In this verification, practical on-site feedback is collected from players and coaches. The valuable feedback, which will lead to improved usability of the application and development of new features, is being used to further improve Playbox, and Playbox will continue to expand its services to provide value to more teams based on the knowledge gained from this verification experiment.
Future Prospects
Based on the results of this verification experiment, Playbox will continue to improve the functionality of the product version and will gradually incorporate features that are not yet available. In addition, we will enhance the perfection of "Playbox" through demonstration experiments with more teams and aim to solve the issues of "capturing game video" and "utilizing video" in the sports field by applying image processing technology and video recognition AI technology.
Comment
The University of Tsukuba's soccer team is where Scott and I came from, and we have gained a lot of knowledge and experience as players and analysts. The development of the video selection application "Playbox" was inspired by the issues we felt while in the club, and we are strongly aware that issues related to video analysis are common to many sports clubs. We are convinced that we can provide a more valuable solution by combining our video recognition technology with the extensive knowledge of the University of Tsukuba's sports clubs through this demonstration experiment with the University of Tsukuba Kickball Club. We will utilize the knowledge gained from this experiment to develop a product that can be used by more teams.
Ikuma Uchida, Playbox
I believe that this product offers a solution to the common comments we hear from the field, such as "I don't know how to analyze" and "I don't have time to look back at the videos. I believe that this product will not only be beneficial to coaches in terms of streamlining and shortening game analysis, but will also lead to a deeper understanding of soccer and improved performance when players themselves use this product to look back on their own play. The product is still under development, but I hope it will be improved to better meet the needs of the field.

About the University of Tsukuba Kickball Club
The University of Tsukuba Football Club is one of the oldest clubs in Japan, with its origins in the foot-ball club of the Higher Normal School, which was established in 1896. This year marks the 127th anniversary of the club's history, which has been handed down from its predecessors, Tokyo Higher Normal School, Tokyo Bunri University, and Tokyo University of Education.
